6 Round, Pangyo, Seoul…the argument-ending KBBQ

KBBQ = a roll-your-shirtsleeves eating ritual in which diners grill different cuts of meat themselves over a tabletop grill, to be enjoyed with complimentary sides

In true Korean style, 6 Rounds offer their table top BBQ to allow you to cook your own meat, you can have everything from beef ribs to pork belly marinated in their house sauce, and scorched to your liking. The marinated beef, a Korean barbeque classic, marinated into an unmistakable tenderness, is much-lauded here.

Happy eating, people. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine, Melaka…This is damn shiok

Nyonya cuisine is intensely rich, gutsy and accented with tangy, pungent and sour flavors. What makes Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine so fascinating and different is that it exemplifies the tenets of Slow Food. Peranakan recipes do require time-consuming preparation.

The food at Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine bears the hallmarks of the best of home cooking. The extraordinary kangkung kobis keledek masak titik lemak (water convolvulus, cabbage and sweet potatoes in coconut milk) was a superb dish which has a flavor quite unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. The ikan geram asam (fish cooked in aromatic spicy tamarind gravy with ladies finger) was well balanced and deliciously rich. The udang goreng asam (succulent prawns sautéed in thick tamarind juice) was heavenly with a nice asam dressing to finish it off.

This is damn shiok. Shiok translates as conveying strong pleasure or tingling of the taste buds.  This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Asiamedic Wellness Assessment Centre, Singapore….I was easily seduced by a bargain

Like many over-fifties – and many who are much younger – I endlessly and pointlessly worry about my health. I was intrigued, as any middle-aged hypochondriac would be. Had my misspent youth left irreparable damage?

For many, the aim of the assessment is to reveal any potential hidden health problems, so that they may be treated before an illness develops. Though I don’t smoke and I eat pretty well (aside from too many snacks). I am also quite unable to resist a bargain. So I was easily seduced by the offer from Asiamedic Wellness Assessment Centre.

Slightly spartan compared with some of the other clinics, this ‘holistic’ health screen included a consultation with a nutritionist as well as Prostrate Ultrasound, urea breath test and Treadmill ECG, tumor marker tests and ultrasound liver, and a consultation with the doctor. I was told to fast from 10pm the night before as I would be having blood tests. On arrival in the morning, I was given a packaging kit to provide stool samples for later analysis, slightly off-putting but no doubt vital. Then I was taken by a nurse into a pristine medical room where she tested my eyes, ears, blood, weight and height.  It was relaxing and non-threatening. For two hours I undergo a barrage of screenings.

I left each feeling reassured and empowered – and a bit smug. It was enough for a boy to want to go to the pub and order a celebratory bottle of Savignon Blanc or three. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack, London…unfussy place serving decent seafood

“Seafood shack”. Not “seafood restaurant” nor “seafood café”. And true to their name, it was a simple setting with a village seaside atmosphere right smack in the back streets of the West End.

The food was decent -good ingredients, well cooked – the service warm, if a little slow. The Inverawe oak smoked salmon, crispy capers, horseradish cream, croutons was passable. The whole looe lemon sole almondine, wile Hayle mussels, samphire, capers, almonds was so-so and I find hard to get excited about.

It’s not bad. I had a moderate time. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Dragon-I, Hong Kong…cream of Hong Kong’s club scene

Whether you’re looking to meet someone new, dance to the biggest DJs in the world or just want to have the kind of legendary night you’ll keep secret until the day you die, you’ll find it all in Hong Kong.

Dragon-I is an amazing uber-chic club with a stunning setting. A dining area known as Red Room, a dance floor and bar space with New York-style booth seating called Playground. It doubles as a modern restaurant and the food is surprisingly good. The crowd is those that know and those that want to find out.

Dragon-I is the cream of Hong Kong’s club scene ensuring a great night out in style. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Jin Yue Xuan, Zhuhai…For taste, wow… just wow!

This restaurant has palatial interiors. Fortunately, the same can’t be said for its prices, which are value for money. It’s surprisingly affordable. I cannot vouch for my soul but the time I visit this restaurant I cannot help but feel happy and satisfied. Everything, from the fresh ingredients to the presentation is spot-on.

Make sure you sample the barbeque pork in honey sauce. This is some of the barbecue pork I’ve had in a long time. Don’t miss the baked prawn in sea urchin sauce. The texture is very rich and buttery. It tastes like nothing I have ever eaten before in my life. The sweet and sour prawn with hawthorn sauce was also well executed.

If you are in Zhuhai and want somewhere to enjoy a cheerful meal with friends, look no further. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Tai Cheong Bakery, Singapore…very difficult to limit yourself to just one

This beautiful delicacy has no equal in the world. Only the Hong Kong or Portuguese egg tarts can inspire such passion.

Egg tarts are found on every street corner of Hong Kong and Macau. The ones at Tai Cheong Bakery is reputed to be the best in the country. In Singapore, this flavoursome egg-enriched shortcrust pastry provides textural contrast with the wonderfully smooth, creamy custard. It’s a very eggy treat.

The tarts are at their addictive best when they’ve cooled down slightly but are still warm. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Premium outlet Cha-Am, Hua Hin…..a ghost town disguised as an outlet mall

If you are a seasoned shopper, you would probably love to shop in outlet malls.

There is not enough big names to pull the shoppers into this premium outlet. Although it has names like GEOX, Billabong, ECCO, Triumph, Samsonite, Lacoste, everything isn’t a bargain, finding a deal in here requires a little work – and it sorely lacks the appeal of outlet malls. It’s simply just dull and very quiet. Practically deserted. The staff standing by idly while they wait for something to do. Very dull with no atmosphere. Zero, ziltch, nil, nothing, nada.

It’s just a vast expanse of brick and mortar emporiums that many Thai and tourists no longer visit. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
