Keng Eng Kee Seafood, Singapore….the coffee pork ribs has serious kick

While Singapore life may not be getting any cheaper, its appetite for great value food has never been bigger. Nobody wants roti prata every night – regardless of how cheap it may be – hence a zi char eatery is a good cheap eat. No list of zi char outlets in Singapore could be complete without Keng Eng Kee Seafood Restaurant.

Coffee Pork Ribs is the best thing in this place. Yes. You read that right. The signature dish in a seafood restaurant is pork ribs. This phenomenal dish is simply out of this world. The viscious coffee sauce gives the almost impossibly meaty ribs great depth of flavour and serious kick.

If you are looking for good food at wallet-friendly prices, KEK is a useful place to plot-up. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Penang Trick Art Museum, Penang…become part of a painting

Two dimensional painting that trick the viewer into thinking they exists in three-dimensions allowing visitors to ‘crawl into’ the paintings to take amusing, and often bizarre, photographs. This art form originated in Japan and is gradually gaining worldwide popularity.

Sitting on a flying carpet, pulling Sadako out of the TV by her hair, battling mummies are all possible at Penang Trick Art Museum. Unlike other museums where signs such as “do not take photos” or “do not touch” abound, this museum is all about taking photos and being part of the art. It’s a surreal experience walking among art that seems to leap out of the frame.   This is a great place to have some silly juvenile fun.

During an age when ‘virtual reality’ is taking over the digital world, artists have shown that all you really needed is a brush and a canvas to trick the mind. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Nara Thai Cuisine, Bangkok…Incredibly average

Back in the Thai life again. I just can’t help it.

I feel like Thai seasoning – one of the most complex, magical and downright thrilling food cultures in the world – normally has a KICK of balanced acidity and flavor, which makes it so appetizing, but Nara Thai lacks that altogether.

Here, in dishes such as kung pad pong karee (fried prawns with yellow curry), tom yum kung, kai jiew nua phu (Omelet with crab meat), Gai Hor Bai Toei (chicken pandan), everything was so predictable and make no impression at all. However, the Nara coconut ice cream with assorted Thai sweet condiments is very special and certainly looks the part. Damn, I’d happily eat this baby every day.

I have to say I think Nara Thai is incredibly average. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Escape room, Petaling Jaya…The Great Escape gets a lot of things right

The Escape Room @ eCurve is absolutely a dream come true! I mean, as a lifelong puzzle lover, how could it not be!? Over the past year, I have been become involved in the growing fad of Escape Games.

THIS Prison Break room is my new favorite of all time. The way we were let into the room absolutely blown me away. We were handcuffed to each other, blindfolded and led. When they removed the blindfolds, we were standing in a prison cell. The room did look the part. If it wasn’t for the countdown clock, you could imagine you were in a real prison. How cool is that? Prison wardens do come in to check on you. Little details like this really added to the experience. While the decor was thematically appropriate, not all the puzzles elevate the story.

If you like this type of thrill, I recommend giving it a go. Tell them the Room Escapist sent you. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Chocolat N’Spice, Singapore…A wonderful way to start the day!

Honestly, I’m not a big muffin fan.  I don’t hate muffins, but I don’t love them either.

These coffee walnut, mocha and chocolate chip muffins at Chocolat N’Spice are rich and tender, high-rising, and deep coffee and chocolate colour respectively. Bursting with flavours with a light, airy and cakey crumb, these really are amazing.Very enjoyable with just the right amount of sweetness without being overbearing. Again, great size and not at all dry!

As it turns out, I do enjoy muffins.  Fresh Chocolat N’Spice Muffins. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Eathai, Bangkok…Thai food theme park

The Marche experience awaits diners at Eathai. Chart your own course, select your meals, watch a cook prepare your food, get your card stamped, and then relax in an upscale setting. The never-ending variety of regional dishes are offered from stalls and carts so it has elements of the culture and camaraderie of street food stalls.

The noodle soup with yentafo sauce is a deep pink-orange noodle dish with an assortment of tasty toppings – chunks of pork, fish balls, fried tofu, rectangles of coagulated blood, and a big crispy chip. Yentafo sure is something different. It’s all sweet, all pink, like Hello Kitty.

I like to refer to it as a food theme park. If you are looking for a place with a nice ambience, this place is a good bet! For food that is unforgettable – this will not be the place. It was nice, but definitely not a place, where you will go on and on about the food to your friends. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
