Calypso, Bangkok…burlesque, or rather more appropriately boylesque

Bangkok is, without question, the world capital of gender-bending performing arts.

At Calypso, the ladyboys take the stage for a 75-minute-long splashy show that features dancers, lavish costumes, musical interludes and comedy. Some of the boys-as-babes try their best to impersonate and lip-sync some of the most well-known female musicians.

Yes, everything is opulent and over the top. But the prices are steep and the bar staff can be snooty.

My advice? If you’ve seen this kind of cabaret before, there won’t be a lot of surprises here. But if you never have — or if you’re a fan — it’s probably worth the coin to take in Calypso. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Chuan Tin Garden Restaurant, Muar…past its prime

Though I’m often excited about new restaurant openings, sometimes old is gold. Chuan Tin Garden Restaurant is a classic throwback restaurant still around after all these years.

Though the restaurant may be well past its prime, it’s legendary teochew style fried oyster omelette is still going strong. Not to be confused with oyster omelette, or orh-luak, the fried oyster omelette is fried until golden crisp and small oysters are scattered on it.  There’s a lot to love about this not-so-humble oyster dish.

Other than that, nowadays all are welcome here for distinctly average Chinese food. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Candlenut, Singapore…a study in average

Last year, Candlenut was awarded one-Michelin-star status, an accolade that means its cuisine is “a very good restaurant in its category.”

So I went.

It being the world’s first Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant, I was really looking forward to my dinner – expectations were high but realistic. My meal at Candlenut was a study in average, unevenly cooked fare, a tough sell in a city like Singapore. The kitchen seemed to try too hard to be “different” but the food was often too bland. None of the plates served barring the homemade kueh pie tie shell, crab meat, yeye curry, pickled shallot, laksa leaf – were, in any way, remarkable. When you are paying good money for a meal you expect at least a few dishes to be memorable.

Overpriced. A one-star disappointment. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Korea Samgyetang, Seoul…not entirely satisfying

There is much more to Korean food than BBQ beef short ribs and kimchi.Samgyetang is the ultimate Korean comfort food. A whole chicken is stuffed with ginseng, sweet sticky rice, mung beans, sweet potato, green onion, garlic, and other goodies in chicken broth with Korean ginseng. A warm bowl of Samgyetang is especially comforting in cold weather, and it warms your heart up instantly.

Named Designated a “Best Korean Restaurant” by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and labeled as the 1st Samgyetang restaurant in Seoul, alas, the chicken itself was a little bland, and the flavours in the broth was not as intense as it should be. For a truly delicious Samgyetang, head to Tosokchon. And their rotisserie chicken has made its way onto my “I would rather go hungry than eat this food again” list.

In short, as a restaurant experience it was more interesting than satisfying. Not that I really mind. Hell, it’s only dinner. It’s not like it’s the end of the world. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Youyen, Hua Hin…seafood with an unbeatable view

There are few more satisfying experiences than eating good food by the sea. What’s not to love about a seaside view and a cool breeze on a hot day? Absolutely nothing!

But not all beachside views are created equal, and that goes double for what’s on the menu. The food at You Yen (some Thai and some Chinese styled cooking) – Stir fried prawn with garlic, deep fried fish in fish sauce, pan fried oyster with egg, stir fried baby coconut with shrimp, baked rice in pineapple – is honest and pretty average.

The real draw is seafood at bargain prices with an unbeatable view. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Tai Cheong Café, Singapore…the Marmite effect: some rave about it, some feel its meh

There are more exciting Chinese cuisines out there these days, but sometimes all you want is a good old-fashioned Hong Kong feed. That’s when you head to Tai Cheong Café. Tucked away in Holland Village, Tai Cheong Cafe is really a cha chaan teng.

Their three coloured silky egg rice are the ones to go for here, with plenty of egg to temper the rich flavours and their egg tarts also always hit the spot. I come here only for this. The others on the menu isn’t as good.

I can’t say Tai Cheong Cafe gets everything right, or that it’s a Hong Kong diner destination, but I’ll stand behind this humble—and quite cheap eatery. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
