Tsui Wah, Shenzhen…failed to impress me

Tsui Wah is the Shenzhen outpost of a revered restaurant of the same name in Hong Kong. Let’s cut to the chase: this is the place if you want to visit a giant, super-sized neon version of Hong Kong’s humble coffee shop cafes (called a cha chaan teng, literally a tea food hall).

The dishes are pure Hong Kong comfort food, an eclectic and inexpensive assortment of Cantonese, Asian, and Western fare prepared for the Chinese palate. Start your meal with a local favorite—milk tea—followed, perhaps Lamb Chop Curry, King Prawns in XO Sauce with Tossed Noodles and wonton with fish roe in fish soup. And you’ll be missing out if you don’t try the famous crispy bun topped with sweet condensed milk.

Although there wasn’t much wrong, it failed to impress me. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Yin Ji, Singapore…the rice rolls leave you wanting more

Yin Ji is the kind of Chinese restaurant that feels like it’s been around for ever. In fact it originates from Guangzhou in 1958.

The rice roll (chang fen) are the stars of the show at this unpretentious joint on the corner of Far East Square. The signature fresh prawn egg roll is packed with fresh filling, the casing of my plump, sweet prawn number achieved the perfect balance between elasticity and translucency – a rice roll Holy Grail.

Yin Ji is by no means cheap, but it is worth every dollar and more. So, in the name of sanity, go. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Old Hong Kong Kitchen, Singapore…deeply unlovable

Old Hong Kong Kitchen owners, have you eaten at your restaurant in Novena Square 2? Did you eat the dim sum? Did it live up to your expectations? When you hung that sign by the entrance that says, voted top 5 dim sum restaurants in Singapore, were you just messing with our heads? How did the rest of the food turn out so deeply unlovable? Does this make it sound as if everything at Old Hong Kong Kitchen is inedible? I didn’t say that, did I?

The siew mai – forget it. The fried stuff were oil-soaked yet not very crispy. I don’t know how this place survives. I don’t care about the decor, I want my food. The prices were too expensive for what it was.

This restaurant has probably the worst dim sum I have ever eaten in Singapore. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Va Fung, Macau…it’s surprisingly affordable and lip-tinglingly good

Dim Sum is arguably one of Cantonese cuisine’s finest contributions to the world. It’s one of the few types of foods I can eat repeatedly without tiring of it, because of its endless variety.

Don’t be put off by the nondescript appearance of Va Fung, this Macau number prepares Cantonese- food fit for a banquet and it’s surprisingly affordable. If you have a big group, this is the place to come. All the classics are done very well here — prawn dumplings (ha gau), siew mai and Cheong Fun with shrimps and char siu – and quite a number of the items are really lip-tinglingly good.

What more could you need? This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Restoran Nobel House, Kuala Lumpur…worth a special trip

With the vast choice of  sprawling, ever-changing Chinese restaurants before you in KL, it is often difficult to know where best to go. Nobel House is one of these totally trustworthy restaurants which will give you a more refined dining experience…and blissfully so.

It’s a minefield of a huge menu in here. The Cantonese food, too, has a touch of the high street, only done really, really well. The flavors are all intense and wonderful.

Noble House is part of the Oriental Group of Restaurants which also runs Noble Mansion in PJ. Either one is still worth a special trip and trust me, whichever you pick, you won’t be disappointed. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
