Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, London…100% worth a visit

If you are already planning your year end holidays, here’s how you can make your Christmas extra special and magical.

If you fancy some festive atmosphere, Winter Wonderland is an annual event in London’s Hyde park with fairground rides, Christmas stalls, markets and entertainment for all ages. Entry is free. This is truly a wonderful wonderland thanks to the sheer volume of what’s on offer. There are pre-bookable attractions that you can book online.

Wrap up warm for The Magical Ice Kingdom as it’s -8C in there! Last year the Magical Ice Kingdom presents an ‘Deep Sea Adventure’ – an immersive walk through experience filled with ice, snow sculptures and a bubble wall. Bar Ice is next to the Magical Ice Kingdom and this time it’s about -10C. Here, you’ll be given a winter cloak and gloves. That’s because the seats, tables, walls and even your glass are made of ice.

As it gets really dark the whole place seems to shimmer with light and it does indeed feel very festive. The food on offer looked tempting – including the usual bratwurst and German beer, to fish and chips, hog roast, minced pies and mulled wine.

They’ve got every kind of ride imaginable… Christmas coasters, carousels, waltzers and dodgems. They’ve got a Fun House which is four storeys tall! The Haunted Mansion is actually a mansion. Of all the thrill rides, highlight for me was Air Maxx. G’s all the way. My inner adrenalin junkie was truly satiated.

The Grinch would have a real challenge stealing all the Christmas from Hyde Park. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Oink, Edinburgh…Insanely cheap and lip-smackingly delicious

If pork is not your meal of choice, then Oink is not for you. If you are a “gourmet”, go for these hog roasts. And if you simply like good food, run to Oink and buy a couple of pulled pork roast rolls! Oink, as its name suggests serves only one thing and that’s pork.

There is only two choices on the menu – a roll stuffed with slow roast pork with / without crackling ! These tasty treats come in three sizes : Piglet (80 gms of meat), Oink (160 gms of meat) and Grunter (250 gms of meat). Oink size was just right for me. The pig is salted and tray-roasted, to retain its juices, and then shredded and served on bread rolls and customers can add a selection of toppings including sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and chilli relish. The bread rolls are cheap, flimsy things, but you get a generous mound of quite majestic meat.

Simplicity itself, this. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Whiski Bar & Restaurant, Edinburgh…as Scottish as ye can get

Situated close to Edinburgh Castle, on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, Whiski Bar has a warm, relaxed atmosphere, with shabby chic décor and mood lighting creating the perfect environment to sample a ‘wee dram’.

The excellent food offering concentrates on the Scottish classics. Arguably, Scotland’s national food is haggis, neeps and tatties, which consists of sheep’s or calf’s offal with suet, oatmeal, and seasoning. Whiski Bar’s haggis stack with delicious whiski sauce is the best to try it for the first time. The Scottish Atlantic salmon, mash potato & lemon cream sauce is amazing and if you liked salmon you will love this.

Wagamama, London…Just not worth it.

While Wagamama is a semi-intriguing name, the interest can stop there. This is clearly Japanese food tailored to a Western palate. Everyone love Japanese food, but the Japanese food here is really mediocre as far as I’m concerned.

And the Shirodashi ramen?  (slow cooked, seasoned pork belly on top of noodles on a rich chicken broth with dashi and miso. Topped with pea shoots, menma, spring onions, wakame and half a tea-stained egg) Well, that left much to be desired.

What to avoid: The poorly made Wagamama ramen (grilled chicken, seasoned pork, chikuwa, shell-on prawns and mussels on top of noodles in a rich chicken broth with dashi and miso. Topped with half a tea-stained egg, menma, spring onions, wakame and pea shoots) was objectively terrible. It was barely Japanese at all. And for a Japanese restaurant, what an achievement!

Why settle for middle of the road when there are other options? Just sayin’. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack, London…unfussy place serving decent seafood

“Seafood shack”. Not “seafood restaurant” nor “seafood café”. And true to their name, it was a simple setting with a village seaside atmosphere right smack in the back streets of the West End.

The food was decent -good ingredients, well cooked – the service warm, if a little slow. The Inverawe oak smoked salmon, crispy capers, horseradish cream, croutons was passable. The whole looe lemon sole almondine, wile Hayle mussels, samphire, capers, almonds was so-so and I find hard to get excited about.

It’s not bad. I had a moderate time. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Leisure Games, London…Great for kids from 12 to 50

Tabletop games are back. I’ve been into tabletop games my whole life, and it’s so exciting to see that there’s a return. Many are turning to these retro pleasures as a respite from the computers, gaming consoles and mobile devices thought to have rendered board games obsolete.

This London store is stuffed with board games, collectable card games, roleplaying games, historical wargames, as well as miniatures, traditional games and dice  . It’s one of a handful of classic hobby stores still around. Specializing in tabletop games, Leisure Games is also a prime spot for enthusiasts to try out at one of their free gaming tables.

Great for kids from 12 to 50—usually of the male persuasion and bored by video games. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Mandarin Kitchen, London…the absolute best lobster noodles

There are hundreds of Chinese restaurants in London and for those of us who love digging into real Chinese food, the question remains: Where should I eat?

Looks aren’t everything. Indeed, they may not be anything. Mandarin Kitchen is your departure from the fancy decor and dining in aestethically appealing ambience.

The big draw here is lobster noodle, the finest you’ll get in London. Egg noodles get studded with a whole, cooked lobster with ginger and spring onions for the ultimate comfort dish. Almost every table had a plate of them lobster noodles, imagine all the rising warm aromas from each and every table filling the air within the restaurant… ahh, I don’t know about you, but a good Chinese restaurant is always about the smell and the noise, the more the merrier. Though they cost more than dim sum and roast duck, the lobster noodles here are so flavorful they’re worth their inflated price tags.

Regardless, it is a fantastic thing on the menu, and on your plate. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Orcs Nest, London…This is the best place to go to get board games in London

An incredibly tiny store with an undeniably superb and rich range of board game stock and role playing books. Although deceptively small, it’s compact, with each shelf inside jammed with a vast variety of board games. This place has a ton of stuff.  The walls are bursting with games. It’s unmatched in this regard in London.

In terms of atmosphere, it has none of the buzz of other London game stores like Forbidden Planet. It’s pretty close to a tube station so just a few minutes walk.

The guy who worked there was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.He was very approachable when I asked for some recommendations.Believe me, it was difficult to decide what to buy, there was so much on offer here. He asked what games I already played and liked, then made some great suggestions. If I had the luggage space, trust me, I would have bought more than the just one.

Bottomline is: fantastic store, excellent selection, but will burn through your wallet! This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Patty & Bun, London…it’s hard not to be seduced

A good burger is a thing of beauty, a satisfying, messy manifestation of all things umami.

The main event is the Ari Gold. From the first, slightly salty bite I was won over. Sloppy, sauce-dribbling-down-your-fingers-tasty, it’s the best burger I’ve ever had in London. The perfectly pink, almost blushing beef patty is unbelievably juicy, without being sloppy. The bun is soft enough not to put up a fight, but strong enough to the job of keeping it all together.The toppings of cheese, jammy caramelised onions, ketchup, just-crisp-enough smoky bacon and “P&B mayo” meld together happily.

The atmosphere couldn’t be more laid-back: tables are bare. And boy, those calories are worth it. This is the true truth as Isay it as it is…

Sea Shell of Lisson Grove, London…from legend to myth

London just wouldn’t be London without a helping of fish and chips.

Sadly, I never expect to have an order of cod and chips as sad as the one served to me at Sea Shell of Lisson Grove. Certainly not at this London restaurant dedicated to fish and chips. Many years ago, on my first visit here, the hunk of cod had an unbelievably crispy exterior. The flaky insides are just as moist as you could ever want and the fries were among the best you’ll find. On my recent visit, though, it’s now the overly greasy, chewy gut bombs you’ll find at a lot of beachside eateries. The fries are unspectacular, limp and without life.

Sea Shell of Lisson Grove has just gone from London legend to London myth. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
