Hogushi, Tokyo…I’ve had better massages

Filed under: Activities, Japan, Massage, traditional, wellness — Tags: , , , — PEr @ 1:27 pm

It’s no secret that Singaporeans are stressed, but when it comes to unwinding, we’re pretty competitive about that too—that’s where shiatsu massage in Tokyo come in.

Hogushi was recommended by the hotel concierge as a traditional shiatsu joint offering services with modest price tags. Privacy is precarious here, and the curtain separating the beds mean the moans and groans you hear may not be your own. Maybe it’s my high expectations but it was nothing special and nothing horrible. No matter how strong he was, the didn’t have the right technique no pressed the right spots. I left feeling like no work had been done on me.

If you want a real good deep massage, this place is not for you. I’ve had better massages. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Dao Spa, Shanghai…head back to your room and take a nap instead

We’ve all been there. Going into a spa with great anticipation, only to find that the massage room is falling apart or the masseur has brute strength but zero technique. Yes, a bad spa can ruin anyone’s mood, but when you are aching all over looking forward to a good rub-down, the stakes are even higher.

If your body is aching after a long day, and the nearest spa to you is Dao Spa, you might just want to head back to your room and take a nap instead.

Another option: Have a friend rub your shoulders. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Dragon Hill Spa, Seoul…get naked with the locals

Sauna culture is common around the world — including the Japanese onsen and Turkish hammam — but the South Korean variety, a jjimjilbang, is an entire industry unto itself. These 24-hour spas are everywhere in Seoul – like starbucks.

You pay a flat fee for entrance and given a jjimjilbang uniform and a bracelet with your locker keys. But calling the jjimjilbang a bathhouse hardly begins to describe its attractions. Sure, you can take a bath and a sauna. You can sit in a steam room or in or around large, sex-segregated baths filled with extremely hot water. There are professional body scrubbers and masseurs. You can lie on a heated floor (a feature of traditional houses). You can also eat, sleep, date, watch television, read, play computer games.

For all kinds of good, clean fun. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Urban Retreat, Bangkok…Save your money and go elsewhere

Thai massage isn’t for everyone, especially when it’s done traditionally (read: aggressively). You’re not there to be pampered. You’re there to be worked on. And walked on.

Smack dab a stone’s throw from the Asok BTS station, this urban oasis offers a full menu of spa services from massages and body scrubs to body mask and waxing. Sadly, their traditional massage here was  no-ecstasy, all-exorcism. The masseur – Khun Waew – resorted to simply ‘brute’ strength more than correct technique. She ignored everything I asked for, which was to focus on my lower back. I really think this woman has no clue on the proper technique of Thai massage and started making things up.

Save your money and go elsewhere. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Palm Spring Spa, Zhuhai….hands down the best massage of my life

I’ve always enjoyed going to a spa, sit back, relax and forget the world, for a few hours at least.

Today’s spa aficionados can choose from a bewildering array of treatments. The choice can be overwhelming, but here in Palm Spring Spa, the TCM massage is an exceptional, effective treatment which provide welcome comfort and rapid relief. The massuer is capable of intuitively picking up on what I need – a damn-good kneading – and she tailored the massage accordingly. Her knowledge of musculature is generally great, as she tackles each overlapping muscle within my lower back, shoulder blades, neck, and traps using different strokes in different directions. I’ve had countlessmassages in my life, and this one stands out.  The experience was defined by strong hands, focused pressure, precision, and a keen understanding of the human body.

If I was based in Zhuhai, I would make this a weekly or biweekly happening. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Jinshui Zunting, Shanghai…a stress-melting tui na massage

According to the tenets of traditional Chinese medicine, massage can help the body’s qi, or energy, flow freely and remain in balance.

This is an amazing place to go if you have any aches and pains that need sorting out. I’ve been to a plenty of tui na’s across China with my problem back from all my travels. This place is as good and traditional as it gets. The massuer recognised that I also had quite a lot of pain in my shoulders and neck, and worked hard at them to decrease the pressure I was feeling.

I’ve paid for professional physio and sports massages but Jin Shui Zun Ting… Jin Shui Zun Ting has my heart now. I’m very happy I chose this place on a whim. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Let’s Relax Spa, Bangkok…disappointing at best

Facing another day of marathon shopping, BTS trains, traffic jams, food and more food, your family and/or friends may have reached the point where a mutiny is being whispered around the breakfast table. We’ve all been there. Fortunately, Bangkok offers plenty of diverse choices to sooth your body, recharge your batteries and to reconnect with yourself.

Let’s Relax is a luxurious day spa which offers a wide variety of spa packages such as Thai-style massages, herbal body wraps, foot and hand reflexology, and facial relaxation treatments. This place is more expensive than every where else I have been so far in Thailand. But I don’t mind paying to get a good massage.  This was a MEH massage. This place is HORRIBLY overpriced for a Thai traditional massage and the masseur does not work on my problem areas.

To put it bluntly this was not my scene. The lemongrass drink before the massage, the mango sticky rice after the massage–the whole thing was not my jam. Maybe it’s yours? If so, enjoy the THB900 Thai massage that is strong but lack technique. I’ll be elsewhere. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Shanana, Hangzhou…felt better but not “in heavens”

Like many Asian countries it is quite easy to find a massage in China. I had no clue what to expect at this place (which was recommended by the hotel concierge), but it turned out cleaner and more professional than I expected. This tranquil retreat was legit, not a hint of anything improper.

As for the massage itself, I’d rate it a B. I was looking for Chinese massage- Tuina – but didn’t get that. If you are expecting something like a chiropractic massage, then this is not for you. The pressure is perfect. Hard enough to feel like it’s doing some good but not so hard that I need something to bite on to stop myself from crying out. But try as she might, she couldn’t zoom into the knots in my lower back and thus failed to loosen them. I definitely felt better after the massage, but not “in heavens”.

The best thing – their English is not very good so you never run the chance of getting a CHATTY massage therapist (my pet peeve). This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Scents & Senses A Touch of Thai, Melaka…an authentic, pocket-friendly massage that takes you right back to the massage shops in Thailand

The serene, authentic Zen-like Asian aesthetics interiors here make it just as relaxing to sit on a soft sofa with a drink as it is to lie down and be manipulated. In a day and age where regular massages are no longer seen as just a luxury for the rich, but a necessity for the health conscious, places like Scents & Senses are so important. They offer locals a reliable and affordable place to go. Not just once, but time and time again.

With no bells and whistles to distract, the Thai massage takes center stage, with the exceptionally talented Khun Safe, the masseuse loosening parts of the body I didn’t even know were tense to begin with.  This woman’s hands were made for massage, her thumbs found and removed knots in my lower back as if she was popping bubble wrap. Truly massage bliss.

Totally professional service, reasonable prices, intense and deep massages, the therapists are all from Thailand and made for a great, authentic experience! I won’t go anywhere else in Melaka after finding this place. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Health Land Spa & Massage, Bangkok…production line massage

One of the saddest places on earth is the departure terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. I have experienced this  melancholy several times when, after checking in, passing through immigration and then security, it hits you all at once: you are leaving this wonderful piece of the planet. Gone are the great food and the traditional Thai massages.

From the outside Health Land looks like a retro mansion and inside it’s a little like Grand Central Station. The moment I walked in, it was far from a tranquil environment. Though well decorated, I felt like I was in a factory production line. Until you get to your treatment room, you’re just a number (or rather name). They’ll call your name (through a microphone) and you’ll be escorted from the waiting room to an area with benches where you’ll exchange your shoes for slippers and greet your therapist. Then you’ll be led to the elevator and on to your room. I felt like I was going for a ride in a theme park.

The staff at the reception desk may not be the friendliest welcome team around but once you get are enjoying your Thai massage you will soon forget about this. The massage was amazing! I’ve been to other places where they just hurt you. The masseur here uses her hands, arms, elbows, knees and feet apply firm, rhythmic pressure to various parts of the body along with the masseuese taking a casual stroll up and down the length of the back. My lower back got more attention as I’d requested and the pain significantly reduced. She is a true Thai massage master. She’s strong and has big thick arms and hands. She was built for giving massages. Thank GOD for her.

The price is really worth what you get!!!! THB500 for 2hours

The omnipresent “new age spa music”  and the generic herbal scent wafting the air might seem clichéd, but what Health Land lacks in personalized service, they make up for in value for money. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
