Gyoza-Ya, Singapore…Gyozas softer than your lover’s thighs

Gyozas are the best quintessential comfort food; they are packages of joy in each bite, and generally inexpensive. They are usually a sideshow at most Japanese eateries. But over at Gyoza -Ya, these doughy half-moons have been turned into the main event.

As you would expect from the restaurant’s name, there’s a decent list of gyoza – pork, vegetable, crab, prawn. The pan-fried beauties here are delightfully plump, succulent, and juicy. Their edges seared to crisp filigrees, their seasoned interiors dense and my fav, the pork ones are pork-heavy. Service is swift and super friendly and the menu un-intimidating. Bottom line? Gyoza-Ya doesn’t serve up haute cuisine, but it does make for a pleasant spot in which to indulge in a not so- light lunch or dinner, at wallet pleasing prices.

They are (to borrow a description) “softer than your lover’s thighs” and yet I won’t want to share them with my lover. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Sing Thang Yeng, Bangkok…totally gaga on these aroi mak mak crunchy Thai snacks

“Aroi mak mak”. That’s delicious in Thai. Thailand does not need any introduction when it comes to its food and snacks. It is loved by many of us.

I am a kid in a candy (or Thai snacks) store when I’m here!! It’s a tiny place in MBK. But the crammed racks heavy with imported Thai crackers, cookies, and other goods reveal just the beginning of its epic selection of Thai snacks and sweets. You would be familiar with the flavors here:  coconut, taro, savory/sweet/salt/tart dried fruit, the fragile and luscious texture of the coconut cakes.

My personal favourites are the pork floss egg rolls and the rice cracker with pork floss. Dry, subtly sweet and satisfyingly crunchy. You get that crispy oomph!

Go totally gaga on these aroi mak mak crunchy Thai snacks. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Restoran Silva’s Curry House, Subang Jaya…a fabulous teatime treat

This restaurant made the news fairly recently for all the wrong reasons…for unjustifiably spiking their prices. But the show must go on. They should be noticed for their food.

The onion bhaji was probably my first introduction to the joys of this eatery so I feel I owe my long-time bud, Dr Soma, a considerable debt of thanks for  this simple snack . They’re almost ethereally light and addictively crisp. Onions are onions. For me, the difference between a great bhaji and a merely adequate one is in the crunch – as with all deep-fried foods, it should fight back – and Silva’s are particularly feisty. I am big fan of south Indian food and that’s why I absolutely love the vada here…crispy fried Indian donuts….light and fluffy on the inside with a crisp exterior, packed with flavor.

Their Bru coffee with full cream milk was a heavy mouth feel, a rounded and balanced profile and a beautiful sweetness. It was love at first sip.

I’d like to describe Silva’s as a “hidden pearl”, but I’m probably the last gourmand in Subang to dine there. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Tatsu Teppanyaki, Singapore…It won’t be cheap, but it will be great.

Flames fly in Tatsu. Obviously this type of high-octane dining isn’t going to be to everyone’s taste and it probably won’t win any Michelin stars, but it certainly has its loyal fans.

The chefs and the servers will go to great lengths to make sure you are happy. Cooked at a high heat and with only a drizzle of oil, the lightly seasoned cod fish with sauce in foil was delicious. The portions are smallish, but adequate. The amazing Aburi Sushi which consists of 5 pieces seared sushi and 7 rolls is a popular item on the menu. Layers of flavour and texture woven together in a symphonic result. Jiro might dream of sushi, but I have spent every waking moments obsessing about the seared sushi I had here.

What made me pleased to be here? Pretty well everything. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
