Humble beginnings, Johor Bahru…mille crepe with a smellfie. Awful!

I was at Humble Beginnings in City Square Mall, JB and absolutely loved their mille crepe. However, my experience was ruined by the a horrible stench. The place literally smelled like raw sewage. Disgusting! Utterly overwhelming!

I just never understood how restaurant managers are so oblivious to such an important detail. Whatever it was, it left me gasping with nausea, enough that I talked to other people about the stink.

Totally unappetizing. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Seven Oaks, Johor Bahru…JB’s most out-there place to while away an afternoon

The humble Johor Bahru cafe is rarely just that anymore. At just a few months old, Seven Oaks is already proving to be JB’s most stylish cafe. Nothing in JB can yet match the beyond library-themed chic interior drugged with palace opulence facade.

JB’s not a city that’s short of a good bakery or cake shop, but separating the outstanding from the ordinary can take a fair bit of munching. I’ve kindly gone and done that for you. The ground floor at Seven Oaks is a bakery with scrumptious looking cakes and pastries that cry: eat me! Their salted egg lava croissant is of course their fame and fortune. The upper levels serves as a cafe.

Sure, these expensive go-tos might set you back a bit, but they’re worth every cent. It is worth the visit for the décor alone. This is JB’s most out-there place to while away an afternoon. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Simply life, Hong Kong…God knows it’s worth it

Make your way to Simply Life. Just follow the aroma of fresh bread and cakes to a bunch of tables packed with shoppers and office workers. God knows it’s worth it. There’s no denying that this charming cafe’s celebration of life paraphernalia is on point, with the place being decorated in European country style complete with benches and green turf.

The ample food offeing to fill your bellies is high quality: a handful of sandwiches and a lovely spread of baked goods. Light Bites, Small Plates, Large Plates, yadda, yadda, yadda, and the prices are kind. I had the bacon and beef burger with fried egg and cheddar cheese. My God, it is a tasty eggsplosion.

A steady stream of City slaves keeps this tiny treasure buzzing – and it’s easy to see why. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

White Flower Factory, Bangkok…I walked away pleasantly surprised.

I wasn’t expecting much from this innocuously named Siam Square One outpost, but I walked away pleasantly surprised.

I opted for the Thai tea crepe was reasonably pleased with the layers of paper thin crepes, each separated with a brush of light thai tea flavour. A simple, effective conversation stopper unless conservation could be construed as a series of affirmative grunts. The chocolate fudge looks and tastes great. It’s a plate which calms the senses like the orderly simplicity of a Japanese garden. The lemongrass juice was sweet and refreshing with a clean aftertaste.

Taken on its own merit, this is a fun, casual cafe you’d definitely use if you were in the area. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Chocolat N’Spice, Singapore…A wonderful way to start the day!

Honestly, I’m not a big muffin fan.  I don’t hate muffins, but I don’t love them either.

These coffee walnut, mocha and chocolate chip muffins at Chocolat N’Spice are rich and tender, high-rising, and deep coffee and chocolate colour respectively. Bursting with flavours with a light, airy and cakey crumb, these really are amazing.Very enjoyable with just the right amount of sweetness without being overbearing. Again, great size and not at all dry!

As it turns out, I do enjoy muffins.  Fresh Chocolat N’Spice Muffins. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Cheesecake Factory, Orlando…insanely popular

Anywhere you go in America, the insanely popular Cheesecake Factory has 45 minute-plus waits. Usually an ever-present line, packed dining area, and palpable levels of excitement are reliable indications of great food, but I’ve never had a truly outstanding dish….until now.

The dishes are all American size, meaning quite large, so you certainly won’t leave the restaurant hungry. I have had herb crusted fillet of salmon, garlic noodles- Spaghetinni, fresh asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, oven-roasted tomatoes in a delicious garlic sauce with shrimps, grilled monterey squid, Black eye peas, oven tapen. The light crab bites at the Mall of Millenia, Orlando was the standout. This is amazing! I thought. this has got to be the tastiest thing I had at a Cheesecake factory.

Their cheesecake is world-renowned and comes in many flavors that is sure to satisfy anyone and everyone.

Opening the menu at The Cheesecake Factory is like opening an encyclopedia the large menu gives you different things to try each time. So check it out. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

iHop, New Jersey…Excellent pit stop before shopping at The Mills at Jersey Gardens

I have been told by quite a few folks that iHop is not worth visiting. iHop is the International House of Pancakes. It’s not the international house of shrimp or the international house of milkshakes! It’s the international house of freaking pancakes! iHop is not a fancy steak house. Get over it!

The iHop I went to is actually a rather large space – they have plenty of seating. It’s right across from Jersey Gardens.

The original buttermilk pancake is the signature favorite they’re famous for but for all that brouhaha, it is pretty average. So is the bacon cheeseburger. The ham and egg melt features a fluffy omelette topped with ham, Swiss and American cheeses on grilled artisan sourdough bread and it’s incredibly satisfying and filling. Helllooo delicious! Another wonderful dish is the loaded country potato soup which was hearty, creamy and filled with variance of texture and bits of bacon. And most of all…it made me close my eyes, sigh, and feel like everything till the end of time is going to be okay. This soup will warm your ever-loving heart and soul. I absolutely promise.

I will keep coming here as long as the door stays unlocked! This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Corner Bakery Cafe, Washington DC…..Great morning food

The Corner Bakery Cafe is one of my favorite things about DC. This location is very large, with nice interiors and moves through the busy lines quickly.

It also has tons of different options including the soup and salad or sandwich combos. Their huge and delicious muffins, and pastries never disappoint. The name says it all! The bread and butter of Corner Bakery are their pastries. They make THE softest and moistest muffins you’ll EVER bite into. The Anaheim scrambler in all its mouth-watering glory comprised of – scrambled eggs, sauteed bacon, tomatoes, green onion, cheddar cheese, avocado. Nothing beats good quality ingredients and simplicity. Bacon and cheddar panini – scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese on sourdough –  is just that. And fear not… there’s zero dryness. Prices are cheaper than Panera as well.

The staff here are SO nice. Dedicated to making sure you have a great experience, they continuously wow me and win me over with their smiles, niceness and even bringing the food to our table very quickly.

I am 100% absolute that Corner Bakery Cafe will corner the market pretty soon. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Nougatine at Jean Georges, New York City…Fabulous, fantastic, formidable – any and all would describe Nougatine

It was quite an experience to dine at Nougatine at Jean-Georges and one of the best meals I’ve had in NYC.   It is the less formal of the Jean Georges restaurants and this classy casual restaurant shares the same kitchen and even a few of the same dishes (such as the classic Jean-Georges warm chocolate cake), as the 3 star Michelin JG.

I can’t say enough about how great the service was. Service is incredible from start to finish – extremely polite and gracious hosting staff, knowledgeable waiters and an awesome, phenomenal manager – Julian Bruell.  I mentioned that we have to leave by 6.30pm as we were watching a musical at 8. The service was very accommodating and friendly. They sat us at 5.20pm even before the restaurant’s official opening time of 5.30. Glasses were frequently being refilled, our waiter was very polite and attentive, and the timing of the food was spot on. At every course, our dishes were placed in front of us at the same time. I wish I had service like this everywhere.

The fried calamari with basil salt was flavoured perfectly and the citrus-chili dip was so delicious I wanted to dip everything in it! The slowly cooked salmon with sautéed potatoes, black olive and passion fruit was tender like butter and just the perfect visual spectacle. However, towards the middle of the fish, the sauce was way to sour and overpowering. With Jean Georges signature warm chocolate cake with the iced, cold vanilla bean ice-cream, I was reminded how I would get a molten chocolate cake as part of my last meal on earth. It was like a match made in heaven! No one can do chocolate cake like Mr. Jean-Georges.

This will be my “go-to” restaurant everytime I am in NYC. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Taste Better, Melaka…those durian puff were love at first bite

The thing is, I love actual durians but I’ve never been a fan of anything durian flavoured – ice cream, cake, whatever. Taste Better is a small little pastry shop but everything looks pretty tempting, I can’t decide what to get. Don’t be intimidated by the array of unusual flavours here! This. Blew. Me. Away. Confession: I loved it. There, I said it!!

The sign crystal clearly states: 1 Bite Puff: I shot all in, don’t bite! Was so good that I ate up the whole puff at one go? not quite. Overall, I was impressed by my experience. Bite into one of the morsel sized Durian puffs and the Durian literally explodes from within the thin pastry. Not too sweet and yet made of the real deal. Rich, creamy, smooth. Heavenly.

Here’s where to go for your drool-worthy durian fix. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
