ATV Tour, Phuket…escape the boring 9-5

Filed under: Activities, ATV, Flying fox, Thailand, Tour, Travel — Tags: , , , , — PEr @ 5:06 pm

Visiting a Thai massage barely sounds like the place to grab a quick adrenaline fix – but there are still plenty of knuckle-shredding activities to indulge in within Phuket.

August is the rainy season in Phuket and the ATV was a muddy ride for sure! They provide crocs sandals and I definitely recommend using them. They provided ponchos to wear over your clothes when it started raining , but expect to be sweaty under than poncho. A couple of colleagues purposely wore old clothes  that they were willing to throw away.

With the flying fox, you can let out your inner baboon and go through the 100m Adventure bridge comprising various obstacles. Clamber up two flights of steps and whizz along 110m zipwires.

The crew were friendly and informative.  Everyone in our group felt so safe, even those who were not huge adrenaline junkies.

A great way to escape the boring 9-5. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Kruvit Raft, Phuket…plentiful fresh and cheap seafood on a floating restaurant

This place is spectacular! Not once did I feel like a tourist, just a Singaporean walking on water.

Kruvit Raft is modest, unassuming, endearingly awkward; its ugliness and limitations only make it the more likeable. Built on wooden pontoons and having floating wood and net fish enclosures, it is only accessible by longtail boats off the coast of Phuket. Part of the fun is walking around and peering into the different nets to see what’s on offer.   You get to pick the exact fish, crab or lobster that you want for the meal. The plates are affordable here, so the only guilt you’ll feel after scarfing down all those prawns, crabs, fish and lobsters is over your waistline.

If you can’t get Venice organised… have your date night here. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Premium outlet Phuket…I was uber-disappointed!

I write a lot of lists telling shoppers the best outlet malls to visit around the world. But how about where not to go?

Premium Outlet Phuket is supposed to be THE premium outlet mall in Phuket with outlet stores from 300 brand names, Lacoste, Guy Laroche, Hush Puppies, Warner Bros, Levi’s, Nautica, Adidas, Nike and Thai brands, so I was all psyched about what I might find there. I was disappointed with the lack of selection and deals. It was one let down after another. Many of the stores caused me to walk in and out.

Regardless of the downfalls, I did managed to save money – a pair of Geox shoes –  was the only thing that made the trip worthwhile.

I feel for Phuket. It deserves a better outlet mall with real deals. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Jakkajan Seafood, Phuket…I was impressed by the atmosphere and food as I was disappointed with the prices

This is a hidden gem in Phuket. Jakkajan Seafood is made up of a handful of open-air bamboo beach huts, right along beach of the Andaman sea. It’s  great little place to grab fresh seafood, just don’t go there expecting something fancy and you will not be disappointed. Yes you eat outside on pick-nick tables that’s part of the fun and you can dress in shorts, bathers, flip-flops, sarongs, pareos, etc and eat good seafood right on the sea.

Did I just say good seafood? It needs correction. It is GREAT seafood. The Fried sand crabs with salt and chilli, fried fish with fish sauce, seafood tomyum, fried rice with crab meat and shrimps rocked me to my core. The grilled shrimps are spectacular. However, the local vegetable with dried shrimp spicy and sour shrimp paste was average fare.

The downside is that, in addition to being mouth-watering, Jakkajan Seafood is also eye-watering, thanks to the cleverness of the owner in overpricing the food just because we are foreigners.

It’s hard to beat this place for spectacular atmosphere and excellent food and I was as impressed by the view as I was disappointed by the prices. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Restaurant Savoey, Phuket…it just seemed like ‘whatever’

Okay, to be perfectly honest, I find it very hard to rate this place. 3-4 star perhaps.  Don’t get me wrong – food’s good, just not 5 stars.

It is HUGE with indoor and outdoor dining with an outstandingly large seafood display where you get to choose which crab, fish, prawn, lobster, clam you would like.  Their unwritten core values seem to be “if it swims, serve it up”. They have ways of cooking it on their menu with the most popular being baked with butter and garlic sauce. The tiger prawns was pretty good and met all expectations, the tom yum was decent and the lobster came out pretty tough and needed more flavour.

This place is just so-so. Your call. This is the true truth because I say it as it is…
