El Cerdo, Kuala Lumpur…make me want to roll my eyes

Precisely five minutes into the first dish, I realised that this heavily romanticized chopping of piglet with a plate experience was a bona fide tourist trap. Me, I’m all about taste and that’s why El Cerdo just doesn’t do it for me.

The food is grotesquely overvalued. I’m brashly oversimplifying things here, but all that we’d ordered – frito de queso (cheese), toger prawns (wrapped in bacon), guiness ribs, deep fried squid, half a roasted suckling piglet and champinonless angelo were only mediocre.

El Cerdo is overpriced, underwhelming and easily wayyyyyy overrated. Plus, there are plenty of better restaurants nearby. Avoid. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant, London…the most overrated restaurant in London.

It just makes my day when I spend a ton of money on something that I didn’t even enjoy eating. (insert sarcasm here) Okay, I’m totally kidding. I actually hate that feeling and that’s why I am writing this. It’s the worst feeling in the world when you spend a ton of money on food that isn’t even that great.

The food looked good from a distance but on closer inspection turned out to be rather unappetizing. The duck in the three combination barbecued meat was the only acceptable bit. The grilled eel in honey sauce was revolting and the house special “pei-pa” beancurd was not as good as the off-the-shelf beancurd equivalents in Sainsbury’s.

Seriously though, it really is awful. I’m struggling to think of a reason why anyone would actually want to eat here. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Donald & Lily Nyonya Food, Melaka…overrated 100 times

If nobody’s told you yet, it’s average food and unjustifiably pricey. Save yourself the wait and the drive.

And the food is not even that good! The food looked good from a distance but on closer inspection turned out to be rather unappetizing. I had nasi ketuk ayam rendang and taukua rojak. Neither dish was as good as their equivalents in any food court. Both were decent and edible, but as has been mentioned, was ordinary at best.

Honestly, there are many other underrated, inexpensive places to grab nyonya food in Melaka– just take my word for it. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Baan Khanitha by The River, Bangkok…not worth the hype/reputation/money

The Asiatique branch on Baan Khanitha is located at the riverfront area, directly facing the Chao Praya river coupled with the cool breezes and sumptuous views across the water. Other than that, like most overrated restaurants, it is totally fine except for their breathless praise and endless attention that’s celebrated for its own sake regardless of its actual quality.  This is not to say they are not good… just they are not worth the hype / reputation / money.

I tried the lot and these are clearly for people who do not know good food and/or good value. Ruam mitr appetisers (mixed appetizer deep fried spring roll, fried chicken wrapped w pandanus leaff, shrimp cakes, fish cakes), Yam som o (spicy pomelo salad w shrimps n chicken), Tom yam khung nang (spicy river prawn soup), Gaeng phed ped yang a-ngun (roast duck and grapes in red curry), Gaeng karee gai (chicken in yellow curry), Pla hima samoon prai (grilled snow fish topped w crispy lemon grass, galangai, kaffir lime leaves, n young pepper corn), Hoy shell phad prig Thai dam (stir fried scallop w black pepper sauce)

This riverside restaurant of course delivers on the picturesque views, but that’s about all there is to it. This is not about bad food. For the kind of money you will pay here, why settle for anything less than the absolute best? This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
