Nathan’s Famous, New Jersey…no better, no worse

Deep down, I just want to be eating the real Nathan’s dogs at the original Coney Island stand, but I guess, this Nathan’s stall at Jersey Garden food court is what I have to settle for.

A mild, juicy meat and crispy exterior that “melds in a nice way” with bun and condiments. They have the pop when you bite through the skin, releasing all those yummy juices into your mouth. The low points are that it feels processed.

Nathan’s is no better, no worse than any hot dogs in America. Is this as good as it gets, or do I really need to go to the original location? This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

iHop, New Jersey…Excellent pit stop before shopping at The Mills at Jersey Gardens

I have been told by quite a few folks that iHop is not worth visiting. iHop is the International House of Pancakes. It’s not the international house of shrimp or the international house of milkshakes! It’s the international house of freaking pancakes! iHop is not a fancy steak house. Get over it!

The iHop I went to is actually a rather large space – they have plenty of seating. It’s right across from Jersey Gardens.

The original buttermilk pancake is the signature favorite they’re famous for but for all that brouhaha, it is pretty average. So is the bacon cheeseburger. The ham and egg melt features a fluffy omelette topped with ham, Swiss and American cheeses on grilled artisan sourdough bread and it’s incredibly satisfying and filling. Helllooo delicious! Another wonderful dish is the loaded country potato soup which was hearty, creamy and filled with variance of texture and bits of bacon. And most of all…it made me close my eyes, sigh, and feel like everything till the end of time is going to be okay. This soup will warm your ever-loving heart and soul. I absolutely promise.

I will keep coming here as long as the door stays unlocked! This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Johnny Rockets, Jersey Gardens, New Jersey…..Whatever

I give this restaurant a lot for its theme of 50s rock ‘n roll from the cute jukebox at each table, to the dress of the waiters and waitresses to the awesome music blaring.

But the food in this Johnny Rockets in Jersey Gardens, was on the low side of average. Imagine a McDonald’s hamburger run through the dishwasher and you would be spot on for the Johnny Rockets Big Double. The bun was soggy, lettuce limp, and meat like chewing bicycle tires.

The wait staff looked like they didn’t want to even be at work. 0 smiles on the employees faces, just very awkward stares from people who seem like they hate their job and it shows in the way they treat their customers. The service they give you is almost as if they are daring you to not leave a tip.

I  had previously been to a Johnny Rockets in LA three years ago – I still remember how good the hamburger and milkshake were! Maybe that was a fluke because now I am unimpressed. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

The Outlet Collection, Jersey Gardens, New Jersey…Massive Tax Free Outlet Mall

It’s under an hour-long drive from New York City to Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall, which is situated near the newark airport. Though not that high end, there’s something for everyone in particularly the younger crowd with heaps of shops selling street fashion and a large entertainment complex for watching movies and playing video games.

First things first, the shops in thisoutlet mall are indoors – so it doesn’t matter what the weather or temperature is like outside. Because Jersey Gardens is an Urban Enterprise Zone, sales tax on non-clothing items is only 3.5% and there is zero sales tax on clothing items – you’ll save money even before you benefit from the low outlet mall prices! There were over200 shops in the mall but quite a few were disappointing with very little selection and/or sizes. Big name shops like Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nike, Abercrombie Outlet and Calvin klein were massive letdowns.

There are no real “good” restaurants in the mall. With the exception of Johnny Rockets, the rest are clustered in the food court…Sbarro, Nathan’s Famous, Great Steak & Potato Co, to name a few.

This is a very touristy place – everywhere you look you will see an Asian, Hispanic or European. The only reason I will return to this mall is because of its proximity to New York City and that Woodbury is a long drive away. This is the true truth as i say it as it is…

Jersey Boys, Palazzo, Las Vegas…not the music I grew up with, yet I enjoyed the show immensely

The Palazzo Resort has its own special theater (it was a nice small theater with good seats) for this great show which traces the history of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons from their simple beginnings in New Jersey, to becoming one of the top pop groups of the 1960’s, to their inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The show starts out VERY slow but gets better over time. The time-tested music and songs are infectious. The outstanding lead singer gave 100% and sounded exactly like Frankie Valli. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of the Four Seasons or that musical era they represent, you’ll still enjoy the show’s rags to riches storyline which has a fair share of drama, and enough humour and uplift to satisfy both the theater veteran and the vacationing family (with a mild warning for some salty, Jersey-esque language)

This isn’t really music that I grew up with, but yet the fact that I enjoyed the show immensely says a lot. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
