Blackbird, Manila…Hear me now: do not make the mistake of dying before you have eaten here

There are places, that, have great food, but more importantly will also guarantee you a good time. That mean dishes that go beyond excellent but make you smile, too. And all at the right price. Which doesn’t necessarily mean cheap but definitely means value for money.

To start, dive into the exceptionally decadent mushroom, fortina and truffle arancini. The salt and pepper squid and shrimps with sweet soy and ginger was as unusual as it was delicious. Then there’s tempura eggplant and prawn fritters with nuoc cham. These are all more tiny mouthfuls than actual dishes.

The main event comes in the form of impossibly thin slices of grilled short rib, green onion and ginger, kimchi, hot bean paste, lettuce and rice. It is utterly delicious and truly one of the undisputed stars of the show.

Then have a little rest – because you really should try a sundae. The dessert is worth saving space for. The burnt butter and vanilla seed ice creams, chocolate brownie, candied pop corn, salted caramel is an ice cream lover’s dream come true. I believe I have found the single best dessert available right now in the Philippines, or, for that matter, anywhere else.

This is an impressive date spot if you want to bring out the big guns. You’ll keep talking about this truly delicious meal long after leaving. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Korea Samgyetang, Seoul…not entirely satisfying

There is much more to Korean food than BBQ beef short ribs and kimchi.Samgyetang is the ultimate Korean comfort food. A whole chicken is stuffed with ginseng, sweet sticky rice, mung beans, sweet potato, green onion, garlic, and other goodies in chicken broth with Korean ginseng. A warm bowl of Samgyetang is especially comforting in cold weather, and it warms your heart up instantly.

Named Designated a “Best Korean Restaurant” by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and labeled as the 1st Samgyetang restaurant in Seoul, alas, the chicken itself was a little bland, and the flavours in the broth was not as intense as it should be. For a truly delicious Samgyetang, head to Tosokchon. And their rotisserie chicken has made its way onto my “I would rather go hungry than eat this food again” list.

In short, as a restaurant experience it was more interesting than satisfying. Not that I really mind. Hell, it’s only dinner. It’s not like it’s the end of the world. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Chamsootgol, Seoul…the bibimbap is a big hit

Bibimbap is a traditional Korean rice dish served in a hot stone bowl with an amalgam of chopped vegetables and meat, and runny egg yolks to bind it all together.

The bibimbap in Chamsootgol is a big hit. There were bags of textures and flavours in there and it’s a great value dish. The real binder to the whole dish is the exquisitely crisped rice that pulls away from the bowl—the holy grail of any bibimbap. It’s all very tasty, very clean, and I never have to acknowledge the existence of kimchi.

A big thumbs up to the bibimbap. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Chung Jin Restaurant, Seoul…mouthwatering Korean BBQ grilled pork will leave you wanting more.

5+ STARS!!!!!. This place has the best dishes. The interiors are very very basic filled with basic tables, chairs and decor. We called to ask for directions to the restaurant and within minutes of the teleconversation, they’d sent us an sms/text message to say they are looking forward to welcoming us. This is a DIY restaurant, where we grill the slices of belly pork and squid, marinated with red-pepper paste.

Side dishes included lettuce and other tender leafy vegetable, which are used to wrap the Daeji bulgogi and then eaten in all of it’s delicious glory! Of course rice and kimchi are also served. It’s all very hearty and boldly flavoured.

I  would rate the decor/first impression as a 2.5 However the service and foods are a 5+ stars. Price and portion is really reasonable. Authentic Korean food right here. This is the true truth and I still say it as it is…
