Thai Imperial, Johor Bahru…that’s my hard earned money given to a stranger for nothing.

Life in Singapore can be tense. We gird ourselves for overcrowded commutes. We hunch over technology all day long, sit through stressful meetings. Every once in a bit, I permit myself a break and head to Johor Bahru with tired feet, tight muscles and shoulders in need of soothing.

Thai Imperial is in a house and they have three reserved parking spots right in front of their door but the therapist is below average and not very good at finding the spots that need work and nor working them thoroughly enough. There was no stretching or anything. I was hoping to sooth my muscle pain at my neck / back, but got 0 difference.

That’s my hard earned money given to a stranger for nothing. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Airbnb, Condo Grand View 360, Johor Bahru…thumbs down for misrepresenting the listing

If you’re like me, you do not know much about Airbnb. But this much I do know…when I show up to my rental, I should find that it is what was advertised.

With my rental of Unit A05-02 at Condo Grand View 360 in Johor Bahru, the listing booked is misrepresented. There were no bath towels (the listing indicated towels are included) and when I reached out to my host, Daniel, he simply blamed it on the Airbnb system. Hence at 9+pm, I had to scramble to the mall to purchase towels before the shops closed. Daniel who had been very responsive prior to that suddenly went very quiet and ignored me twice when I asked if he was going to reimburse me. Mysteriously, the wifi signal disappeared soon after and never came back on for the duration of my stay. The beds were not as comfortable as you would get in a 1* hotel. We woke up with excruciating pain in our backs. The beds are so hard and uncomfortable, I need a chiropractor.

Genuinely the worst Airbnb experience I have ever had. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Dragon-I, Johor Bahru…it’s Chinese food done properly

I could not have been more excited. I have enjoyed everything this group has offered whenever I’ve been to one of its KL outposts, and I was thrilled that I would no longer have to travel so far.

The food at Dragon-i is really nice and really distinctive. We ordered the Auspicious Treasure Pot (Poon Choi b/ pencai). What arrived was a sizable bowl of braised Chilean premium abalone, premium sea cucumber, Japanese dried scallops and oysters, premium mushrooms and fresh sea prawns, roast chicken, braised pork belly, pork balls, dried beancurd skin, yam, black moss, chinese cabbage, broccoli, deep fried beancurd skin, radish and pork bone stock. The seafood was fresh and well-seasoned; the pork juicy and tender; and the vegetables soaked up the richly flavoured broth very nicely. Service is extremely efficient in this large operation, but don’t expect it to be cuddly.

Drawbacks? The kitchen occasionally gets things wrong, but when it’s on song – the food is really nice. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Lemon Tree, Johor Bahru…God damn is it good.

Much like the beef burger, chicken chop in particular is undergoing something of a renaissance in JB at the moment. Johoreans crave simple comfort food made with better ingredients and more thoughtful recipes.

At Lemon Tree, the lip-licking Hawaiian grilled chicken chop is rich, sticky, sweet and intense. It is ravishing enough to render me temporarily speechless. It’s not just good, it’s unmistakably unique. You could close your eyes, taste this dish, and know it didn’t come from anywhere else. The black pepper grilled chicken chop is another fan favourite. Besides its deliciousness, Its affordability is another reason for its popularity – it’s like a money-saving hack for living in JB.

If anything, my love for the place has intensified. The bird is the word. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Go Noodle House, Johor Bahru…noodle soup in JB gets better

When I am in JB, a bowl of warm, rich and comforting noodle soup is still rarely far from my mind. Go Noodle House has taken noodle broth to new heights.

Superior soup bursting meatballs is a winner. The stock was fragrant and rich. The ban mian, which I order with regular thickness,  come with a lovely bite and spot-on, especially with their moreish undertone. The bursting meatballs has a perky tastiness that lifted the spirit as well as the tongue. Man, this meatball is great! Don’t forget the dates wolfberry tea.

Put Go Noodle House on your Johor Bahru map. It’s one of the best noodle soup you can get in this city. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Restoran Siam House, Johor Bahru…Seriously delicious Thai food in a classy setting

‘Authentic’ is overused on Malaysia’s restaurant scene but Siam House in Johor Bahru has managed to do the word justice. The space is stylish and cosy with comfortable tables not too close to one another.

I’m not going to lie, it’s been a while now since I last had a good Thai meal in JB. But all that has changed as I’ve discovered Siam House. The only one real struggle with Thai cuisine is that you always want to eat just about everything. Everything was so well-cooked and everything was packed with flavour. True to tradition the food is served spicy by default, so give the waiter a heads up if you want to tone down the chilli. It’s reasonably priced and the staff made it a welcoming place too, which always helps when choosing a new favourite restaurant!

It was great to finally find a quality Thai restaurant in JB that offers a little finesse and fine dining atmosphere for any occasion. Good food and excellent value for money – there’s more than one reason why I and you should be visiting Siam House very soon in the future. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Restoran Tapai Tang, Johor Bahru…tastes better than it looks

Johor Bahru food was once considered Malaysia’s poor culinary relation, but there are hidden gems in the city. Restoran Tapai Tang is one of the few old-school JB dining institutions where the quality has actually improved in recent years.

Their famed salt baked chicken is so tender, you won’t be able to stop eating it. wat tan hor (rice noodles in egg gravy) is perfectly fried with the lustrous eggy gravy over the wok fragrance flat noodles is just as good. On the minus side, all this good food is simply plonked on to the plate willy-nilly. This may be ugly-ass food – even the photo (below) doesn’t look very appetizing– at least not to me! But, I swear, the dishes were delicious.

This is a time your dinner tasted better than it looked. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Humble beginnings, Johor Bahru…mille crepe with a smellfie. Awful!

I was at Humble Beginnings in City Square Mall, JB and absolutely loved their mille crepe. However, my experience was ruined by the a horrible stench. The place literally smelled like raw sewage. Disgusting! Utterly overwhelming!

I just never understood how restaurant managers are so oblivious to such an important detail. Whatever it was, it left me gasping with nausea, enough that I talked to other people about the stink.

Totally unappetizing. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Seven Oaks, Johor Bahru…JB’s most out-there place to while away an afternoon

The humble Johor Bahru cafe is rarely just that anymore. At just a few months old, Seven Oaks is already proving to be JB’s most stylish cafe. Nothing in JB can yet match the beyond library-themed chic interior drugged with palace opulence facade.

JB’s not a city that’s short of a good bakery or cake shop, but separating the outstanding from the ordinary can take a fair bit of munching. I’ve kindly gone and done that for you. The ground floor at Seven Oaks is a bakery with scrumptious looking cakes and pastries that cry: eat me! Their salted egg lava croissant is of course their fame and fortune. The upper levels serves as a cafe.

Sure, these expensive go-tos might set you back a bit, but they’re worth every cent. It is worth the visit for the décor alone. This is JB’s most out-there place to while away an afternoon. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…

Jag Tech Auto Service, Johor Bahru…No glitz and glamour. Just reliable, reasonable price and good service

There is not a single car service that will be perfect 100% of the time. However there are some that are more reliable than others, won’t charge you an arm and a leg and won’t make unnecessary recommendations.

No glitz and glamour with Jag Tech Auto Service. Just reliable, reasonable price and good service. They’d changed my engine mounting and stabilizer links and were timely, upfront about the costs and oh so courteous.

They are definitely my go to in the future. This is the true truth as I say it as it is…
